映画『シドニー・ホールの失踪』感想(ネタバレあり)

『シドニー・ホールの失踪(The Vanishing of Sidney Hall)』―――三行で言うと、他人とまともに向き合うことなく〇慰的な作品を書きなぐっていた少年が、ある事件によって嫌でも向き合わざるを得なくなり、その思わぬ結果にぶちのめされ、今度は過去を”なかったこと”にしようとしてしきれず、「結局、まあそれも他人から見れば無駄ばっかりってわけでもなかったよね」という話。
親との関係で生み出された感情の”鋳型”を叩き壊すのがいかに難しいか、そして、同じネタが受け取る人によってどれだけ違う結果をもたらすかを実感する話でもあります。
というわけで、まずはあらすじ的なところから―――。

あらすじ的なもの

ハイスクール時代に書き始めた作品で一躍時代の寵児となってしまったシドニー・ホール(ローガン・ラーマン)さん。ピューリッツァー賞を目前にしてファンが作品の主人公と似た状況で死を選ぶという事件が起こり、世間から叩かれまくり、賞も逃します。
それでも自主規制には応じず、二作目はさらにバカ売れするのですが、今度は本人が「5月25日」という謎の言葉を残して失踪。

五年後―――
図書館や書店で、彼の本が焼かれる事件が立て続けに起こり、”ブレット・ニューポート“という名のIDカードを持った男が捕まります。
偽の警察手帳を使ってこの男を追っていたフランシス・ビショップ(カイル・チャンドラー)は、保釈金を払って彼を解放。この放火犯の正体はシドニーでした。

フランシスは、かつてピューリッツァー賞をシドニーと争い、受賞した作家。彼は「私の息子はあなたの作品に救われた」と言い、「伝記を書かせてほしい」と頼みます。
が、シドニーは、フランシスの申し出を断り、ある場所に送って貰って、そこで別れます。
そこは、元妻メロディーと「30歳の5月25日になったら、お互いどんな状況になってもこの場所で会う」と約束していた家でした。

それからほどなく、シドニーが瀕死の状態で病院に担ぎ込まれたというニュースがTVで流れます。続いて、「シドニーが話をしたがっている」という病院からの電話。
実はシドニーは、母親から受けた頭部の傷が元で、幻覚と肝機能障害に悩まされていたのでした。
病室を訪ねたフランシスは、シドニーから過去の話を聞かされます。

ハイスクール時代、“ブレット・ニューポート(ブレイク・ジェンナー)”というクラスメイトがいたこと、
ブレットが小学生の頃、彼の父親(裁判官)が、少女を家に連れ込んでは”そういう”行為を繰り返していたこと、
ブレットがそれを録画し、テープをシドニーと二人で丘に埋めたこと、
ブレットの妹やブレット自身も、父親から虐待を受けていたこと、
掘り出したビデオテープを、容れ物の鍵と一緒に預けられたこと、
警察に行く前、勝手にシドニーの部屋に入ってビデオを見た母親にテープを燃やされたこと、
それが原因で、ブレットが自ら命を絶ったこと、
妻との離婚直前、自分が追い縋ったせいで妻とエレベーターに閉じ込められ、喘息持ちだった妻はそのために亡くなったこと―――

全てを語り終えたシドニーは、フランシスが去った病室で、ようやく妻メロディーと”会う”のでした。

なぜ彼らは年齢の割に幼いのか

ブレットが亡くなった当時のシドニーとブレットは、運転免許を持っていることから見て、最低でも16歳です。放火をやらかしたときのシドニーは30近い。ヘンリー・クロウは、死亡当時22歳です。
その割には、やってることが幼い。(あくまで”一般人目線で”は)

シドニーについては、過去を消す手段がアレすぎるし、「自分の影響力を使って、これから世の中にプラスの影響を与えりゃいいじゃん」という発想も自信もない。

ブレットについては、母親がちょっと神経症っぽい(←息子の帰りがちょっと遅くなったぐらいで、いきなり警察に電話するのは異常)ので同情の余地はありますが、子供の頃のビデオ撮影以来、反撃の手段すら用意しようとしなかったヘタレ具合はちょっと異常。フツーの感覚なら、「え？あんなデカくなっても、父親に逆らえないわけ？」です。
生活費の問題だとか、「罪に問えずにもし帰ってきたら、今度こそやられる」だとか、身内のスキャンダルによって受ける差別だとか、メンタルやられた母親がどうなるか分からないとか、まあ諸々の懸念はあっても、現状が耐えがたいわけですから、何もしないってのはない。実際、「妹がやられているのを知りながら、何もしなかった」罪悪感に殺されたようなもんですからね。

ヘンリーに至っては、22にもなって完全な中二病です。

でもこれは、生まれてこの方、人間関係が常に修羅場過ぎて、まともに人と関わるエネルギーや機会が持てなかったこと、その所為で圧倒的に経験値が足りなかったこと、刷り込みが抗いがたい力を持っていたことを考えれば、何となく理解できます。
シドニーとは違い、ブレットは、ぱっと見ムカつくようなリア充ですが、あの強烈な門限(笑)と、あの強権的かつ狂暴かつ”社会的には信用のある”父親では、ぶっちゃけ勉強とアメフト以外何も出来なかったし、する気にもなれなかったんじゃないかと思います。

シドニーとメロディーの会話に、こんなものがありました。
“I wanna write a novel. Something that’s going to shake people up(小説を書きたいんだ。世界を揺るがすような)”
“If you wanna write a book worthwhile, you have to see the world. Have experiences(いい本を書くには世界を見ないと。経験が必要よ)”

見た目メンヘラ系少女のメロディー(エル・ファニング)が、彼らの壁をぶち壊す側だったのは意外でしたが、結局、彼女の警告は届きませんでした。
幼児体験でいったんOSがフツーじゃなくなると、後々の情報処理の多くがフツーじゃなくなり、その修復にはとてつもないエネルギーが要るということでしょう。

メロディーは妄想の産物か実在の人物か

これがぶっちゃけよく分からない(笑)
とにかく彼女にまつわることは偶然が多すぎるし、「自分にはリアルな”旅”が必要だ」「でなければこんな〇慰っぽい作品作りから抜け出せない」と感じていたシドニーの欲求にあまりにマッチしすぎています。加えて、シドニーは幻覚の自覚症状を持っている。
テープ焼失の経緯(あくまでシドニーの頭の中の)を考えれば、彼女の”死”も、罪悪感の投影のように思えてきます。

じゃあ、彼女は妄想の産物なのか(例えば、静養に行った先ですぐに亡くなって、庭のあの石は形見を納めた墓だったとか、うっかりするとお向かいさんの飼ってた可愛い犬だったとか(笑))と言えば、周りの反応を見ると、そうでもなさそうなんですよね。
彼女が実在の人物だとすると、一気にご都合主義っぽさが増して、自分的には嫌なんですけど(笑)

ちなみにこのメロディー(エル・ファニング)さん、ものすごく可愛いです(笑)
ぶっちゃけ、始めの流し見でこの子が出てなかったら、この映画、観ようって気にはならなかったと思います。可愛いは正義(笑)

OSをやられた人間は何の役にも立たないのか？

アドラーさんに何と言われようが(笑)、幼少期のトラウマは思考の癖を作り、ここから抜け出すのはとても難しい。殆どの人にとって、これは一生背負っていかなければならない重い荷物です。
では、そういう人間は何の役にも立たないかと言えば、この映画のメッセージ的には、明らかに「No」です。

フランシスの息子は彼の作品によって救われ、さらに多くの人が救われることを願って、フランシスは彼の伝記を書こうとします。
結局、有難い教えや美しい物語で気分が上がるのは、ほっといても死なない程度に元気な人で、それ以外の人達にはもっと違う救いが必要なんじゃないかと思いますね。

ブレットはなぜシドニーを頼ったのか

ブレットは、スポーツ万能のイケメン優等生ですが、性格的には質の悪いジャイアンです。ヲタクのシドニーを嘲笑ったり、大人しいクラスメイトを虐めたり…。
そんな彼が、五年生の時にはテープ隠しの共犯者としてシドニーを選び、それを掘り起こしたときには、シドニーに鍵まで預けています。
えらい頼りっぷりです。その理由は多分、シドニーが権威や権力というものを華麗にスルーしていた所為でしょう。

実際、シドニーは堅物の教師の前で、小学六年生時代の〇慰の経験を赤裸々に綴ったエッセイを披露していますし、どう見たって弱そうなのに、「あいつを虐めるのは止せ」と平気でブレットに直談判に行っています。
父親や世間が文句なく評価する『勉強』『アメフト』というものにしか打ち込めず、人間関係を上下関係でしか見られないブレットとは正反対です。
だからこそ必死でシドニーを嘲笑い、一方で、「こいつなら」と期待もしていたんでしょう。もしかしたら、テープを掘り起こして内容を暴露してくれるとすら思っていたのかもしれません。あの作文の朗読を聞いて、真っ先に問い質したかったのは「あれを埋めた場所」ではなく「あれを見たのか？」だったのかもしれません。
結局、彼の期待は裏切られます。

“I should have listened to his words and taken them more seriously. But I didn’t(もっと深刻に受け止めるべきだったのに、そうしなかった)”

シドニーは、自分が”何をしてしまったのか”正確に把握していました。
彼は、さらにこう続けます。

“I may not have been there when the knife went in, but I was there ever since. He’s been with me. watching me(彼が死んだときは側にいなかった。でもその後は、彼はいつも傍に居て僕を見張ってる)”

思えば、後にシドニーのエージェントとなった教師が、彼の実力を初めて認めたのも、祖父の死について書いた作文でした。
結局シドニーは、“死”という強烈な事件によってしか、他人を心の中に入れることができなかったということでしょう。

彼らの悲劇は本当に『ちょっとした偶然の積み重ね』から起きたのか

“I know the entire course of a person’s life can change, in a millisecond(僕は、ほんの一瞬で人生が変わってしまうことを知っている)”

こんな台詞がありましたが、彼らの悲劇は、むしろ変わることが出来なかった結果のような気がしてなりません。
家を飛び出してきたブレットにたまたま会って一緒にテープを埋め、その数年後、あの作文をたまたま朗読させらせ、それに触発されたブレットがテープを掘り起こし、そのテープがたまたま見つけられて燃やされ―――こう見ていくと確かに、「ちょっとした偶然の積み重ねでとんでもないことに」というふうにも見えますが、そもそも、ビデオを埋めてからずっと、お互いに何のアクションも起こさなかった時点で、あの結末は決まっていたんじゃないでしょうか。
決定的な結末を迎える前に、”自分のやってきたことの誤り”に気付くだけの視野の広さを持ちたいですね。

シドニー母のようなタイプからは全力で逃げるべき

シドニーの母親は、この映画の登場人物中、最強のクラッシャーです。…の筈なんですが、「あなたに全部つぎ込んだ」だの「母親にちゃんと敬意を払え」だの、「ああ、この人も、今まで満たされてこなかったからこうなったんだな」と思わせるようなセリフが目白押しです。息子をブチ倒して怪我を負わせた後は、泣き出して、それまで何に対しても無関心に見えた夫に慰められています。もうちょっと早くこうなっていたら、この悲劇は起きなかったと言わんばかりです。
いや、でもちょっと待て(笑)

この人は、世の同情すべきカサンドラ症候群の方々とは根本的に違います。なぜなら、夫が自閉症であることは、もう見た目にはっきり分かるからです。
スペクトラム(要はアスペ)レベルは生きていくために必死で擬態しますが、この旦那は全く擬態できていません。彼がこういう人間であることは初めから分かっていた筈です。分かっていたことがそのまま起きたからと言って、「あたし可哀想」「だから何をしても許され、慰められて当然」というのは違うんじゃないでしょうか。

しかもこの人、自分の所為で流血した息子に駆け寄りもせず、泣いて旦那に慰められてるわけですよ。加えて、シドニーはこのとき、明らかにまともな治療を受けていない。もう、人として終わってます。
身内がこういう人間だった場合、見捨てるのに罪悪感を抱く人は結構多いと思いますが、そこで躊躇うと自分が致命傷を受ける可能性があります。背負いきれないものは背負わないのが吉だと思います。

自主規制をしないクリエイターの多くは、鈍感でも傲慢でもない

シドニーは、ファンが命を絶ったことで本を焼かれ、政治家からも「この本を教材から外せ」、「本を検閲の対象とすべき」などと叩かれまくります。
しかし、記者会見に臨んだ彼はこう言います。

“I apologize for nothing. I cannot predict what reaction any particular individual may or may not have to something I have written.
Nor can I live in fear, or restraint anytime I write a word on a page.
I can only hope that in time, the books I write will have a positive impact.
It is sickening to see that some congressmen are using this boy’s family during their time of grief for political gain. It’s shameful”

いわゆる『ぐう正』というヤツですが、このとき、彼のこめかみには汗が浮いています。そして、この直後、うわ言のように”I’m sorry“と呟いて、会見は強制終了となります。彼の目には、亡くなったファンの青年、そして、ブレットの姿が見えていたのです。
本を焼いて抗議する人々よりも、彼が堪えていなかった筈がないわけです。
安易に規制を叫ぶ人々は、新たな傷が出来ない代わりに新たな救いもない、不毛な世界が望ましいのか、真面目に考えてみるべきでしょう。

どんな団体からも叩かれない作品で、人生のどん底から這い上がるような何かを得たという人が、どれだけいるでしょうか。そうした作品は大抵、世間的に「正しい」とされているものを、実例を挙げて「正しい」と訴える作品なので、観る前に結論が分かっています。『”正しい”方向に向けて頑張っていたけれど、ちょっと疲れてしまった人』には勇気を与えるものですし、問題の存在すら知らない恵まれた人達の目を開かせる力も持っています。が、それ以外の人にとっては、あんまり力にはならないんですよね。

炎上商法でわざと過激なことを言うというのは言語道断ですが、傷つく人がいるという理由で、『問題作』を安易に叩くのはどうかと思います。
そもそも、声さえ上げられない超マイノリティ―の地雷もカウントしたら、誰も傷つかない作品なんて誰にも作れないわけですし―――

と書いていたら、自分史上最長の感想になってしまいました。
こういう深読みポイントてんこ盛りの作品は、はっきり言って大好きです(笑)
