映画『ウィンストン・チャーチル　ヒトラーから世界を救った男（DARKEST HOUR）』ネタバレあり感想

映画\1,100の日ということで、早めに観てきました、『ウィンストン・チャーチル　ヒトラーから世界を救った男（DARKEST HOUR）』。
行ったのは日比谷だったのですが、第一回の上映前に既に第二回が売り切れているという盛況ぶり。やはりアカデミー賞効果でしょうか。

しかし、見どころは、ゲイリー・オールドマンの演技や、辻一弘氏の特殊メイクばかりじゃありません。
最初はバリバリの反チャーチルだった国王が、ランチミーティングで「次に何を言うか分からないので怖い」と白状し、チャーチルの父母の話を聞いてぎこちなく笑い、最後には、他国に国を蹂躙されることに素直に怒りを覚える(もしかしたら国民を見捨てて逃げたり、自分だけがおいしい取引をしようとする有力者達にも)に至った心境の変化とか、ダイナモ作戦で捨て石にされ、もうすぐ死ぬのだと知りながら傷痍兵の一人一人に声をかけて労わるカレーの提督の姿とか、タイピストのレイトン嬢が、ダンケルクで具体的にどれだけ死ぬのかを聞きたがり、涙を流した理由とか、チャーチルが、そのレイトン譲の「顔を見ている」と言った理由とか、マッチの箱の裏に書き付けられた市民一人一人の名前とか、なんというかグッとくるシーンが目白押し。

そして、暗い室内に陽光が白く差し込む映像がとても美しい。
ぶっちゃけ、ガンジーをdisったチャーチルが主人公でなかったら、作品賞も夢ではなかったように思うのですがどうでしょう？

というわけで、登場人物については語りだしたら止まらない気がするので、歴史を中心にあらすじと感想を――

あらすじ

「てめぇが辞任しなけりゃ、連立政権から降りるぞ！（←勿論意訳）」と労働党党首クレメント・アトリーに脅されたチェンバレン、労働党が認める唯一の後釜にして保守党議員の嫌われ者＝ウィンストン・チャーチルに首相の座を譲ることになります。
しかし、ヒトラーとの和平をまだ諦めてはいないチェンバレンとハリファックスは、当初からチャーチルを引きずり下ろす気満々。「和平交渉には絶対に応じない」という言葉を引き出し、これを理由に閣僚を辞任→内閣不信任案決議で、辞任に追い込もうとします。が、チャーチルは引っかかりません。それでも、事あるごとに和平への提案をしては蹴られるチェンバレン＆ハリファックス。

しかし、事態はチャーチルにとって良くない方向へと転がっていきます。
カウンターアタックのプランは？と訊かれて「There is no plan」と答えちゃうフランスさんは、もはややる気なし。
アメリカさんは、中立法をタテに「ウチに火の粉掛けないでよ」状態。
ベルギーも陥落、そして、ダンケルクで孤立した３０万人の兵全滅を目前にして、ついに和平案を検討することに―――
(民間船を使っての、兵の救助は計画中でしたが)

しかし、ヒトラーに屈したら”どうなるか”を理解しているチャーチルには、それが本当に正しい選択なのか？という迷いがあります。
そこになんと国王来訪（ちなみに夜遅く）。チャーチルの就任当初はあからさまに反チャーチルだった国王ですが、侍従に「カナダに亡命して、国外から統治されては？」と薦められるに至り、「I’m aware of feeling bloody angry」な境地に。（余談ですがこの国王、『英国王のスピーチ』でコリン・ファースがやったジョージ6世です）
抗戦に理解を示し始めた国王の勧めで、チャーチルは国民の生の声を聴こうと地下鉄の駅に向かいます。（ちなみに、映画の冒頭でチャーチルは、「ストの時しか地下鉄に乗ったことがない。しかも迷って散々な目に遭った」という話をしています。ちょっとやり過ぎな感じの伏線ですが・・・(笑)）
地下鉄に乗り込み、そこでなんと市民にマッチを借りて葉巻に火を付けるチャーチル（当時は、消防法はないのか？(笑)）
「良い条件がヒトラーから示されたら、彼と和平交渉に入るべきだろうか」の問いに対し、市民は口を揃えて「Never!」と答えます。戦況は厳しいと知った上での彼らの決意に、うっかり泣きそうになったチャーチルですが、そこから先がすごかった(笑)

彼らの声を思いっ切り盛って(笑)閣外大臣＋”その他誰でも”向けの演説に使い、その勢いで下院での「We shall never surrender!」演説に臨み、ついに議会で、徹底抗戦への賛同を勝ち取ってしまったのでした。

感想：なぜ今チャーチルか？

作中では「まぐれ当たりだ」という言葉でさらっと説明されてましたが、このチャーチルという人、ヒトラーの危険性について早くから警鐘を鳴らしていた人物として超有名です。どのくらい早いかというと、1934年には『ヒトラーの真実』とかいうナチス脅威論を発表していたぐらい。

一方、当時のイギリス国民は「ヒトラーとも理性的な交渉が出来る筈だ」と考えていました。当然、断固宥政策支持。
ミュンヘン会談で同盟国チェコのズデーテン地方をヒトラーに売り飛ばすという選択をしたチェンバレンは、平和を守った英雄扱いでした。

これを見たチャーチルは、「戦争か不名誉かの選択。イギリスは不名誉を選んだ上に、今後、戦争することになる」と批判しますが、古くは『ガリポリ上陸作戦で大失敗した海軍大臣』、最近では『世界恐慌で失脚した大蔵大臣』というイメージしかなかったチャーチルが何を言ったところで、皆「じーさん、何言ってやがる」ってな感じ。

これは、ナチスのロビー活動や宣伝工作の所為でもあるでしょう。ナチスと言えば一般的には、『なんかアタマおかしいカルト集団』みたいなイメージがありますが、こういう部分はかなり真面目にやっていました。（ポーランド侵攻の際にも、大義名分を作るために偽旗作戦をやったぐらい）
ロイド・ジョージや、作品中で国王が「兄王」と呼んでいるエドワード8世など、ナチスに協力的で、ヒトラーとのツーショット写真まで流失（？)している有力者がゴロゴロ。そして、市民もこんな感じ…。

こんな状況で「同盟国を救え！」なんて言おうものなら、完全に非国民扱いだったでしょう。
でも、ずっと昔にクラウゼヴィッツさんはこんなことを言ってるわけです。↓

実際、見事にクラウゼヴィッツさんの言う通りになりました。
同盟国チェコを易々と売り渡したことでナチスは増長し、ポーランドに侵攻し、しかもイギリス、フランス両国はポーランドを助けるという約束を事実上果たしませんでした（結果的に宣戦布告はしましたが）。同盟国の結束が乱れれば、そこに付け込まれるのは当然のことです。
昔、クラウゼヴィッツさんにさんざんdisられたポーランドさんは、今度は相当頑張りましたが、一国でどうにかできるわけがありません。
作品中のチャーチルの台詞「I only hope it’s not too late」は、こういう背景があってのことでした（多分）。

で、話は戻って、なぜ今チャーチルかです。

パンフも買ってないので製作者側の意図は分かりませんが、優等生的解釈をすれば、「たとえ今、他人から何を言われようが、自分が正しいと信じることをせよ。評価は未来の人々が下す」とか「重い決断は、苦しく、誰だって迷うもの」とか、「欠点があったって、強みが世のため人の為になればいいじゃない」とか、そんなところでしょうか。
この人のヒトラーに対する見方と姿勢はなんだかんだ言って一貫しています。そして、おそらくは正しかった。(アメリカが参戦しなかったらどうするつもりだったのかとは思いますが(笑))

でも、ちょっと穿った見方をすれば、ナイーヴな市民もそろそろこういう現実を直視した方がいいんじゃないかと言っているようにも聞こえるんですよ。↓

あの地下鉄の一件が事実なのかフィクションなのかは知りません。が、後に、チャーチルが爆撃を受けた場所に出向いては国民と交流を図っていた模様はカメラに収められています。国民の「空気」が読める人だったというのは事実だったように思います。(インド人差別のイメージを払拭しようとしたのか、黒人青年の手を握らせたのはちょっと・・・という感じでしたが)

後にイギリス国民が、ドイツの「イギリスの理性に訴える」という和平提案に見向きもしなかったのも本当で、ロンドンが空襲を受けた時にも、瓦礫を踏み越えて出勤している姿が記録されています。侵略者には屈しないという強いメッセージだっだのだろうと思います。
結局のところ、チャーチルがあの決断を下せたのは、国民自身の、自国を守るという強い意思と、全人類の為にあの独裁者を止めるのだという強い使命感があったからでしょう。（返す返すも、日本が真珠湾をやらなかったらどうするつもりだったんだとは思いますが(笑)）

翻って、今の民主主義国家の国民にその覚悟があるかと言われれば微妙なところです。強権の発動と洗脳が自由自在な全体主義国家にやられてしまうのも、そう遠い未来のことではないようにも思えます。
ただし、ヒトラーがゲルマン民族至上主義ぶち上げたのと同じ過ちをその全体主義国家が犯した場合は話が別でしょう。そのシステムに組み入れられれば差別され、抑圧されると分かっていて、そのシステムに組みれられることを望む人はいません。
さて、憲法前文に「中華民族の偉大な復興」の実現を追加した習近平さんの中国は、今後どこに進むのでしょうか。

余談ですが、ダイナモ作戦の名前の由来には笑いました。あれ、マジですか？(笑)
